Dems See Opportunities in Republican Embrace of MAHA Movement

There鈥檚聽a lot聽going on in Washington right now. While President Donald Trump has聽been grabbing聽for Greenland,听he鈥檚聽also talked in the聽White House聽about health聽policy 鈥斅爓hether聽it鈥檚聽the聽,听聽the nation鈥檚 spiraling health costs, or an effort to聽promote聽聽in schools.聽

At the same time, congressional Republicans are eyeing health issues from the聽鈥Make America Healthy Again鈥澛爌erspective,听hoping it will provide a boost in the midterm elections.聽

Republicans see the MAHA constituency as critical in the midterms and beyond because its supporters include desirable voting demographics:聽independents and聽some聽Democrats,听many聽of whom are women, younger voters, or suburbanites.聽

The strategy risks backfiring, though, because polls show聽聽about reducing health care costs than聽about聽MAHA鈥檚聽war on junk food or efforts to roll back access to vaccines.聽The affordability聽issue聽was thrust聽center stage聽last year聽when enhanced subsidies聽for Affordable Care Act marketplace plans聽expired.聽

As a result,听many聽of the聽roughly聽23聽million people聽who buy coverage on the health聽law鈥檚聽marketplaces are now facing premium payments more than double what they faced last year.聽聽with what has聽emerged聽as a key kitchen table issue.聽

Democrats are strategizing about how to use public support for MAHA priorities to their own advantage.聽They鈥檙e聽hoping to expose GOP policies that run counter to MAHA priorities; trumpet Democrats鈥 efforts to tackle health care costs; and highlight their own party鈥檚 work on such MAHA goals as聽, according to some Democratic strategists.聽

Democrats聽are talking about聽their continuing fight to address health care costs while聽largely聽avoiding聽direct attacks on Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. or MAHA,听because the movement resonates with the public. Meanwhile, cracks are聽聽the聽Make America Great Again coalition聽and the lockstep support Trump has enjoyed from Capitol Hill Republicans.聽

For Republicans, the next batch of MAHA events and summits聽is already scheduled. After taking a political back seat in recent years, health care may dominate the 2026 election races.
