Source: Kaiser Health News analysis of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data using geographic boundaries developed by the .  The overall rating for each region was determined by averaging the 10 scores that Medicare reported for each hospital on its Hospital Compare website. Eleven hospital regions had inadequate data and were excluded from the analysis. The  were from calendar year 2010.
